Chicago police officer, Jason Van Dyke charged with 1st degree murder in the shooting death of  17-year-old Laquan McDonald, according to the Cook County State Attorney's Office.
Van Dyke turned himself in to authorities Tuesday at a Chicago courthouse.
The shooting took place Oct. 20, 2014. According to the Associated Press, people said dash-cam video showed McDonald armed with a small knife and walking away from police officers. Van Dyke allegedly opened fire and kept shooting after the teen fell down, said people who saw the footage.
The McDonald was shot 16 times. An autopsy showed he was shot at least twice in the back.
A judge ordered the police video to be released to the public Wednesday.
The Chicago Tribune reports this is the first time a police officer has been charged with first-degree murder relating to an on-duty death in more than three decades.
