There is talk in the media about the dangers of high blood sugar. What exactly is so bad about it? When someone has consistently high blood sugar, it can lead to many problems such as damage to blood vessels, loss of vision, kidney disease, and nerve damage. When sugar levels remain high, they may lead to diabetes. Higher than normal sugar levels may indicate pre-diabetes. Excessive thirst, weight gain, and a continual desire for sweet, sugary drinks may be a clue that a check-up might be in order. The American Diabetes Association believes that 86 million individuals living in the U.S. may have pre-diabetes. To have good health, one of the important factors is keeping a good blood sugar level.
Blood sugar is called glucose. Glucose ultimately comes from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are contained in bread and grain products like rice and pasta. Other sources of carbohydrates are fruits and vegetables, particularly the starchy ones like squash and potatoes. When carbohydrates are digested, they become glucose. The glucose is released into the blood stream and then absorbed by the cells through the use of insulin, a hormone. Sugar levels can rise when too many carbohydrates are eaten at once. Also infections, illness, stress, and lack of exercise can contribute to higher sugar levels.
Supplements have been developed to help maintain sugar levels. Some contain the mineral chromium. Chromium enhances the action of insulin, so that the body does not produce as much of this hormone. This results in fewer sugar swings, where the sugar goes high, then low. Supplements may also contain herbs that help maintain blood sugar and may even help eliminate sugar cravings. Mild exercise can also be useful in maintaining proper sugar levels.
