Don't Be a Holiday Statistic

The crime rate increases dramatically during the holidays. Most of the increases are home break in, car break in and personal attacks such as purse snatchings. It is within your power to lessen the chance that you will become a statistic. Let's take these one at a time:
Home Break In:
It is important to know that most home burglaries happen during the day when your house is usually empty. Let's take a look at some things that can make a burglar pass your house for something easier. You should first understand that a burglar does not want to spend a lot of time trying to decide if they want to break into your house in the first place. With this is mind:
  • Make sure that all your exterior doors have a good deadbolt lock and door lock.
  • Make it look like someone is home. Leave some lights, TV or radio on.
  • Don't leave bikes or toys in your yard.
  • Don't hide a spare key under you door mat or fake rock, the burglars know that trick.
  • Make sure that shrubs or trees don't hide your windows.
  • Put a steel bar in the tracks of your sliding glass doors.
  • Make sure all your windows are locked.
  • Get an alarm system that monitors the windows, doors and any movement.
Car Break In:
The main lesson here is to remember to lock your car doors whether you are in the car or not. How many of you lock your car at home in your driveway? If you don't you are inviting a burglar into your home. Most homes have a garage door opener with a remote in all the cars. If you leave your car unlocked and a burglar gets the remote they now have access to your garage and most likely your house. Don't leave things in plain sight like your phone, GPS or other electronics. When shopping put all the items in the trunk. At night, park in well lighted areas.
Personal Safety:
I can write a whole article on personal safety, but for this article I will list the top important items that may keep from becoming a statistic.
  • When shopping park in well lighted areas as close to the store as possible.
  • If possible go shopping with a friend.
  • If you carry a purse put it across your shoulder.
  • Do not leave anything of value in the car.
  • Put all items you purchase in the trunk.
  • Make multiple trips to put away items, rather than carrying bags in both hands.
  • Make sure you have your cell phone and it's fully charged.
The most important thing that you have is your brain, use it. We seem to lose our common sense during the busy holiday season. Don't lose yours and become a statistic.
