When Not To Whiten Your Teeth

Think you might like to whiten your teeth?
Your smile is one of the first things that is noticed about you when you first meet someone so it is important to have the best looking teeth that you can. However it isn't always easy to keep teeth bright and white especially as you get older and discolouration occurs as part of the aging process, or if you drink a lot of tea, coffee or smoke cigarettes.
You may have already taken the decision to whiten your teeth but before you go ahead, you need to realise that this isn't a process that is suitable for everyone and that there are times when teeth whitening should be avoided.
Don't Whiten Your Teeth if You Are Breastfeeding
Teeth whitening is not advisable if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Whitening kits often contain bleaches which would not be harmful to an adult but they could be dangerous to a baby. It is not worth taking any risks at all in this situation and you would be well advised to wait until after the birth of after the baby is weaned before you whiten your teeth.
Don't Whiten Your Teeth if You Are Under the Age of 16
If you are under sixteen, it is not advisable for you to whiten your teeth. This is because teeth enamel and gums are still forming and if you whiten your teeth at this stage it could lead to future problems. It would be far better to look for natural remedies and to avoid any food or drink that can cause discolouration.
Don't Whiten Your Teeth if You Have Dark Stains
Teeth whitening works best on teeth which are yellowed. If you have dark brown or black staining it is not advisable to whiten your teeth. The dark stains are not likely to be affected by the whitening agents and may become even more obvious when the enamel around them is whitened so they could end up looking worse than ever. If this is the case for you, then visit your dentist to get advice.
Don't Whiten Your Teeth if They Are Sensitive
If you have sensitive teeth or have had problems in the past with your gums or tooth enamel, or if you know that the enamel is thin, it is best not to attempt any whitening procedures. Any sensitivity could be made worse by the procedure and this could potentially cause quite a lot of pain.
Don't Whiten Your Teeth if They Are Damaged
If you have any broken teeth, cavities or exposed nerves you should have these rectified by a dentist before you whiten your teeth as the bleaching agents could enter the cracks and cause discomfort. Your teeth do need to be in good condition before you start the treatment.
Don't Whiten Your Teeth if You Have Caps and Crowns
If you have caps or crowns on your front teeth, you need to be aware that these will not whiten. At the time that these were put on, the dentist will have matched them to the natural colour of your teeth and that will not change.
If you do not fall into any of these categories and you wish to go ahead and whiten your teeth, be careful to follow all the instructions with the kit that you buy. Don't be tempted to think that more is better. Sensitivity caused by whitening kits usually occurs because they have been overused. Edmond R. Hewlett, DDS, consumer advisor for the ADA and an associate professor at UCLA School of Dentistry says that,
"There's overwhelming evidence that, when used as directed, bleaching does not cause permanent damage to the teeth or gums,"
If you don't fall into any of these categories and you feel that teeth whitening is for you, take a look at the reviews of top rated, affordable teeth whitening kits and get a smile to be proud of.
