10 Easy Ways To Lower Your Risk Of Breast Cancer

Researchers suggest that up to 40% of cancers are caused by lifestyle factors that we have the power to change. These factors include the food you put into your body, nutrient deficiencies and exposure to a vast array of environmental toxins. Here are some lifestyle changes that you can make to lower your risk of breast cancer.
Foods to eat:
  • Eat raw cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, broccoli sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower. These vegetables contain an organosulfur compound called sulforaphane that has anti-cancer properties. If you want to get the most bang for your buck, broccoli sprouts contain the highest amounts of sulforaphane. Raw onions are also a great source of these organosulfur compounds.
  • Mushrooms, including white, crimini, portobello, oyster, shiitake, maitake and reishi, all have anti-cancer properties. They have also been shown decrease the production of estrogen in the body.
  • Fruits, including blueberries, strawberries and blackberries, all contain flavonoids, which have been shown to lower breast cancer risk. Organic versions are best as these are some of the most heavily pesticide sprayed crops.
Just as important as the foods we eat are the toxins we are exposed to.
Environmental toxins and how to avoid them:
  • Chlorine, fluoride and bromine all displace iodine. Chlorine and fluoride are ubiquitous in the water supply so using a high quality water filter is important to eliminate exposure to these elements. Bromine is used in many breads, baked goods and citrus flavored sodas. Methyl bromide is used as a pesticide on strawberries. Buying organic and avoiding too many breads and baked goods will help you avoid exposure. Also look for breads that are bromine free.
  • Personal care products are loaded with endocrine disrupting chemicals like parabens. A recent study showed that 99% percent of breast cancer patients had these chemicals in their breast tissue. Parabens are used as preservatives and can be found in a wide variety of consumer products, such as deodorants, shampoos, lotions, cosmetics, drugs, and food additives. Common names include methylparaben and propylparaben.
Dietary supplements:
  • Vitamin D Blood levels below 20ng/ml have been shown to increase the risk of many cancers, including breast by 30 to 50%. Most people need at minimum 5,000 units of vitamin D3 daily to maintain adequate blood levels.
  • Omega 3 fats Consume 1-2 grams of fish oil per day. Studies show that the high consumption of fatty fish is associated with a lower risk of breast cancer.
  • Fiber Fiber binds to estrogen in the digestive tract where it can then be eliminated. Without adequate amounts of fiber estrogen is reabsorbed through the digestive tract and back into the blood stream.
  • Probiotics These healthy gut bacteria also inhibit the reabsorption of estrogens. Numerous factors can deplete the levels of these beneficial bacteria, such as drinking chlorinated water, low-fiber diets or using antibiotics, thus making it important to replace them regularly for optimal health.
Finally, lose weight. Excess weight results in more free estrogen in the body that can increase the risk of breast cancer.
Here is the good news: Eating a diet that is rich in raw fruits and vegetables lowers your risk of breast cancer. The vitamins, enzymes and thousands of phytonutrients in these foods don't just fight cancer.
